Piston FAQ back to FAQ home

Our piston air compressors and vacuum pumps are built to withstand the most rugged operating conditions, with corrosion-resistant materials used for critical internal parts. These air compressors and vacuum pumps are available in motor mounted and separate drive versions.

• Oilless design delivers uncontaminated air; pumps stay cleaner and require less servicing

• Exclusive lap joint ring design and stainless steel seal provide optimum efficiency throughout the service life of the pump

• Aluminum pistons, cylinder and cylinder heads ensure excellent corrosion resistance

• Stainless steel valves help maintain maximum pump efficiency by resisting moisture and preventing foreign particles from lodging on valve seats

Q: Can water be pumped through my piston unit?
A: No, clean dry air only

Q: My piston pump is leaking around the heads is this normal?
A: The piston unit is not leak proof, leakage around the head is normal, and doesn’t affect the flow rate of unit.

Q: What kind of oil do I need for my piston model?
A:  none, these models are oilless, and do not require oil.

Q: Can I pump explosive gas through my Piston pump?
A: No, none of Gast models are able to pump explosive gases.

Q: I received my dual voltage unit hooked it up to 115 volt power, it runs very slow and lopes what is wrong?
A: Motor is wired for high voltage, low voltage being applied. The unit is wired for high voltage at the factory, you can look on the motor information label and see how to rewire unit to low voltage.

Q: What can I use to clean my piston pump with?
A: Gast recommends using Gast flushing solvent AH255B, if this is not available you can use electrical contact cleaner.

Q: Are there repair kits available for my piston unit?
A: Yes, the kit needed for you unit will be listed on the operation manual received with unit, if you don’t have the manual go to www.gastmfg.com and choose service manuals..

Q: What comes in the rebuild kit?
A: Rings, seals, rider ring, intake & exhaust valves, and gaskets for the head and cylinder.

Q: Can I replace the motor on my piston model?
A: The motor can not be replaced in the field, the unit should be sent to a rebuild center.

Q: Can I replace the rod assemblies in my piston unit?
A: The rod assembly or assemblies (depending on the model) are not field replaceable, it would need to be sent to an authorized rebuild center.

Q: How can I find my closest rebuild center?
A: go to www.gastmfg.com and choose service information, or call 269 926-6171 EXT: 5404.
